Both the Niro Self-Charging HEV and PHEV employ a parallel hybrid system that switches between petrol and electric power, or uses a combination of both, and charges the battery whenever it can. Unlike conventional hybrids, the parallel system keeps energy loss to a minimum as the full output of both engine and electric motor is transferred through the transmission in a parallel system.
Lithium-ion polymer battery
Durable and lightweight, the 1.56 kWh (HEV) and 8.9 kWh (PHEV) lithium-ion polymer battery efficiently controls electrical energy and cools more effectively. Safely positioned below the rear sears, the battery comes with a 7-year warranty.
Regenerative braking system
Kinetic energy produced when decelerating or coming to a stop is captured and turned into electricity. This in turn is used to help recharge the battery.
Kappa 1.6 GDi engine 141 PS combined max power
This 1.6 GDi engine generates a maximum output of 105 PS at 5,700 rpm and a peak torque of 15.0 kg·m at 4,000 rpm – the perfect match for the Niro’s hybrid system. All told, the system offers a combined maximum output of 141 PS.

The New Kia Niro uses more than 53% Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), resulting in phenomenal rigidity. And hot-stamping of components is applied to 24 parts in stress areas. These measures greatly improve body strength, enhancing cabin protection and improving dynamic performance.
Aluminium body elements (bonnet/tailgate)
While critical points use more high-strength steel than ever, aluminium is used in the bonnet and tailgate to help reduce weight by as much as 11 kg for better handling and fuel economy.
